Creating a PRIVATE and SECURE bootable portable Linux USB flash drive.

Pop!_OS Desktop

I wanted to get out of my "comfort zone" and use a different Linux distribution and a different web browser.

Create a bootbale USB drive of System76 Pop!_OS using Etcher

Boot the drive and install System76 Pop!_OS 18.04.4 on a high-speed Muskin USB drive

Why Pop!_OS?
Pop!_OS encrypts your installation by default and is the only distro that enables full-disk encryption out-of-the box.
Does not use GRUB, but uses systemd-boot
Systemd-boot is a simple UEFI boot manager based on the Boot Loader Specification, which enables the Linux kernel to boot itself in a fraction of the time required by GRUB, and with a simpler configuration format.

Setup a Wi-Fi connection

Update Pop OS 18.04.4 to 19.10 (Not recommended, but I wanted to test a upgrade) It worked flawlessly, although took a long time on a USB flash drive.

Install additional drivers - Configure third-party and proprietary drivers

Install the Blue Mail SNAP
sudo apt install snapd
sudo snap install bluemail
Configured Blue Mail and set up my Hosted Exchange account

Wanted to access SD card and USB flash drive both formatted exFAT
sudo apt update
sudo apt install exfat-fuse exfat-utils

Install Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN

Use Firefox as my default web browser
LastPass installed
AdBlock installed
Added a link to my universal bookmmarks

Installed VeraCrypt

Connected and authorized a external Thunderbolt 3 drive

Changed the background image

In the future I may install:
    Google Chrome
    UBlock Origin
Microsoft fonts - sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
    Pop OS 20.04

5 of the Best Laptops for Linux in 2019

New HTPC (Home Theatre PC)
I worked with Charlie and a Intel NUC after everyone had left the SLOLUG meeting last month. I partitioned the SSD and configured a couple of things on Elementary OS Linux which was already installed on the Intel NUC. I liked it so much I decided that my next HTPC (Home Theatre PC) would be an Intel NUC. I was most impressed with the "Intel Visual BIOS" which uses your mouse and not the up/down arrow keys, etc.

I researched the parts and ordered them from B&H. This will replace my older 2013 Shuttle HTPC which has been running continuously since it was turned on.

The parts cost $600…

I will install Windows 10 Professional and Ubuntu Mate 18.04.1 on the Intel NUC. You may ask "Why run Linux on your TV?" Because I can...

I opted not to go to an i7 or 32GB RAM since this is only a HTPC. One of the many reasons to upgrade the HTPC is that it will be 4K compatible with my TV, something my older Shuttle HTPC did not support. The Intel NUC will have 16GB of Crucial RAM and a Samsung 500GB 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 Internal SSD which is 4 to 5 times faster than a regular SSD.

5-Year Warranty
Limited Lifetime Warranty

Charlie's Intel NUC notes:

Intel NUC

This is the site I use most for NUC info. If you scroll down you will find all the NUC’s reviewed.

At the very top you will find a tab called “NUC Guru - Build your own NUC”

Scroll down and you will find a blue “Next” button. Go from there to configure the various NUC’s you might be interested in. I chose the following build:

Intel NUC8i5BEH Next button
16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 memory module, 2400 MHz Next button
256GB NVMe SSD drive Next button
I left the 2.5 inch storage slot empty Next button
No Accessories, Cables Next button
And then I hit the “Buy now” button to see what components would work and to get a price. I could buy from NewEgg or B&H Photo if they had better prices. The following are the components that were listed and the prices that were listed.

• The Intel NUC 8 Mainstream Kit (NUC8i5BEH) - Core i5, Tall $379.99

• Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4 2400 MT/S (PC4-19200) SR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT2K8G4SFS824A $112.99

• Samsung 970 EVO 250GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E250BW) $85.48

for a total of $578.46 plus $30 something in tax, free shipping.

in addition I ordered an Intel NUC 8th Gen LID with Dual USB 2.0 Ports for $21.75 plus Shipping & Handling for $3.95 (no tax) as shown on:

I bought everything from Amazon.

I had researched everything on YouTube to see how to install everything.
